WASHINGTON: Some 2,000 troops from a heavy
armoured division in Fort Hood, Texas have begun deploying to Kuwait for
exercises in the desert intended as a deterrent to Iraq, a Pentagon spokesman
said on Thursday.

"They are going there as part of a rotation of units, but it's a larger,
more robust unit than in the past," said Lieutenant Colonel David Lapan,
a Pentagon spokesman.
He said the estimated 2,000 troops, who will take part in an exercise called
"Desert Spring," were on a brigade combat team from the 1st cavalry
division based in Fort Hood, Texas.
Lapan said the deployment was intended to deter Iraq at a time when US forces
are engaged in a war in Afghanistan.
