Suspicious substance was a loved one's ashes

A railroad worker in Stone Mountain last week discovered a suspicious package with a powdery substance in it.

It's not what you think.

The CSX employee found the green and white "marble type" container last Tuesday beside the train tracks near the intersection of Stone Mountain-Lithonia and Panola roads.

He turned it over to Stone Mountain police. They summoned DeKalb County police to take the container. The County Police Department then handed it over to the Medical Examiner's Office.

"I've got some 'speed ground' human remains in an urn," said Woody Hall, an investigator for the DeKalb County Medical Examiner's Office. "My thinking is it was taken in a burglary or something."

Hall said the ashes had been "speed ground" rather than "pelletized," a process normally used for sprinkling the remains instead of burying them. Hall, who can be contacted at 404-508-3500, is now trying to find out who owns the urn.

If it was taken in a burglary, it won't be the first time in DeKalb County, said police Lt. Pam Kunz, the department's public information officer.

Kunz recalled an incident in 1998 when a burglar believed he'd found a jewelry box when he stole cremated remains from a Sunset Drive home in north DeKalb. But when he discovered the contents were ashes and not amethysts he felt remorseful and tried to return them.

"He felt so bad he left them behind an auto parts store on Lawrenceville Highway and then called the victim," said Kunz.

“Saya  diberikan  satu  tabung yang mengandungi  abu mayat   seseorang  yang  dalam  bentuk ‘speed ground’ (debu  biasa). Demikian  kata Woody  Hall  seorang   penyiasat  yang  berpendapat   abu mayat  itu  telah  dicuri  oleh seseorang.

Hall berkata   abu mayat itu  dikisar  sahaja  dan tidak  dijadikan  berbentuk pellet.  Ini bermakna  abu mayat itu akan ditaburkan  dan tidak akan  disemadikan  secara menanamnya.

Pegawai polis  Lt.  Pam Kunz  pernah  teringat  satu  peristiwa  pada  tahun 1998, apabila seorang  pencuri   yang memasuki sebuah rumah  dan terjumpa  satu  kotak yang disangkanya  berisi  perhiasan  badan dan  batu permata. Tetapi  setelah membukanya  dia  mendapati   abu mayat, yang  membuatkannya  menyesal dan  berazam  memulangkanya  semula.

Dia menyesal  dan  meletakkannya  di belakang  kedai  alat  gantian  dan  menelefon mangsanya untuk  mengambil semula  abu  mayat  itu.
